Software program builders spend extra time not coding than coding – IDC report

Builders spend extra time on operational and background duties than they do on coding, in response to an IDC analyst report printed this month.

Software growth accounted for 16% of builders’ time in 2024, up from 15% the 12 months earlier than, whereas nearly all of builders’ time was spent on operational and supportive duties, in response to the report, titled “How Do Software program Builders Spend Their Time?,” authored  by Adam Resnick, IDC analysis supervisor for contemporary software program.

Builders spent the biggest quantities of time on operational duties together with implementing CI/CD processes and methodologies, utility efficiency monitoring and administration, and infrastructure efficiency monitoring and administration, Resnick mentioned. The most important shift in survey outcomes from 2023 to 2024 was the rise in time builders dedicated to safety, which rose from 8% to 13%.
